1.A pre-agreed word or signal used to pause or stop a scene immediately.

2.A safe word is a pre-negotiated word, phrase, or signal that participants can use during a scene to immediately pause or stop play. The most common system is the traffic light system: 'green' (continue), 'yellow' (slow down or check in), and 'red' (stop immediately). Safe words are non-negotiable — when used, play must stop. For play that involves gags or other restrictions on speech, physical signals (tapping out, dropping a held object, snapping fingers) serve as safe word equivalents. A dominant who ignores a safe word has violated consent.
